Music Theory Lessons Music theory is very highly recommended for everyone learning an instrument. In my theory classes I provide students with two options of learning (in-person or online-ZOOM) and I give my students two choices of learning styles. One being more relaxed and fun with little games in the book here and there (recommended for 5-9YRS) and one which is more formal, usually curated for those wanting to sit exams and needing to develop more musical understanding of their knowledge (recommended for 9-any age).

What all my students can expect from the lessons is to always learn something new and achieve musical knowledge that not everyone knows. It is a very rewarding experience to understand music as another language and you won’t even realise you’re in a lesson cos the time just flies by so quickly in my theory classes!

The April school holiday booking is now open.

Date: Tuesday 7th April to 19th April 2026.

Using original memos that gather many important parts from many theory books. I also use “How to pass (BLITZ) theory” and “AMEB Theory of Music book” for workbook. Weekly or intense school holiday lessons and take an exam with good result.

Theory of Music, Grade 4 to 6 at studio or online
- Teach great skills for Harmony four-part vocal style, Melody writing, two-part writing etc,
- Detail explanation for the dance suite, set work for Grade 4, 5, 6,
- A lot of examples and practice questions to secure the skills.
- Experienced teaching home schooling music theory
- Report progression to parents constantly.

Homework check and send back with explanations
Especially, Cadences, Harmony Four-part vocal style, and creative writing etc. 
For example: I will check the Harmony questions and provide feed back as a homework check, so we can go forward to learn more contents in the lesson, rather than just checking the homework during the lesson.

At Studio: Mainly I use my memo and Blitz book, white board and cards, then students create presentations on what they have learnt at the end of the lesson. Many students said that music theory is so difficult, however, all my students are really enjoying the theory and most of the students has got A+ and A for the AMEB theory and musicianship exam. Music Theory Lessons Music theory is extremely useful to any musician and be very fun when taught in the right way. When I teach theory I focus on exploring 'why'. 'why' did the composer choose this chord? 'why' does this note resolve so well into this one?

I believe that theory is too often taught as a set of rules to be followed, a method which bores students and can stunt creativity. Instead I teach students how to apply theory to playing and writing the music that they love.

I'm also able to help students with preparing for the music theory section of the VCE music performance exam, the part of the subject that most students struggle with.

I have experience running Music classroom, both small ensembles as well as large orchestras and Big Bands. I have worked in a number of well respected schools, both private and departmental, and have been successful within the departments I have worked. Apart from teaching experience, I am also a working musician working with bands in the Rock, Jazz and funk genre, as well as having working in studios producing music recordings. I studied at Swinburn, in the Audio Engineering course, however, due to overcommitment I was unable to complete the course.

During my professional, performing career, I have had the opportunity to work with a large range of diverse bands and ensembles, with styles ranging from Rock, Jazz, Latin, Swing and Progressive/Alternative. I have also had the opportunity to work with ensembles that required me to read and produce charts. I am quite adept at chart reading and composing.

Throughout my entire teaching career, I have been able to incorporate a vast array of technology, MIDI and compositional computer software. I have also had the opportunity to incorporate Technology into live ensemble performances.
As a teacher and head of a music department, I have had the opportunity to develop skills in curriculum development, reporting, progress tracking and skills to assist my students in passing all assessments, both theoretical and practical.
