Music Theory Lessons Music theory is extremely useful to any musician and be very fun when taught in the right way. When I teach theory I focus on exploring 'why'. 'why' did the composer choose this chord? 'why' does this note resolve so well into this one?

I believe that theory is too often taught as a set of rules to be followed, a method which bores students and can stunt creativity. Instead I teach students how to apply theory to playing and writing the music that they love.

I'm also able to help students with preparing for the music theory section of the VCE music performance exam, the part of the subject that most students struggle with.

I feel that my skills would be of benefit to you, as I have highly developed skills in the areas of Music History/Theory/Composition/Drums/Percussion, band/Ensemble direction. I am also quite skilled and experienced in the area of curriculum development and departmental management. I am primarily interested in Music Theory/History and analysis, instrumental music and ensemble work, and have extensive experience in all these areas. I have experience running Music classroom, both small ensembles as well as large orchestras and Big Bands. I have worked in a number of well respected schools, both private and departmental, and have been successful within the departments I have worked. Apart from teaching experience, I am also a working musician working with bands in the Rock, Jazz and funk genre, as well as having working in studios producing music recordings. I studied at Swinburn, in the Audio Engineering course, however, due to overcommitment I was unable to complete the course.

During my professional, performing career, I have had the opportunity to work with a large range of diverse bands and ensembles, with styles ranging from Rock, Jazz, Latin, Swing and Progressive/Alternative. I have also had the opportunity to work with ensembles that required me to read and produce charts. I am quite adept at chart reading and composing.

Throughout my entire teaching career, I have been able to incorporate a vast array of technology, MIDI and compositional computer software. I have also had the opportunity to incorporate Technology into live ensemble performances.
As a teacher and head of a music department, I have had the opportunity to develop skills in curriculum development, reporting, progress tracking and skills to assist my students in passing all assessments, both theoretical and practical.

Experience: Internally ranked 1st in 2022 Music 1 cohort with band 6 marks for all assessments, classically trained in piano for 12 years, extremely knowledgable in music theory, musicology, composition and aural analysis

I will assist students for Preliminary and HSC Music 1 in aural skills, musicology, performance and composition.
Since aural skills is something many students find the most difficult to do in the HSCs (especially under timed conditions...), I will be assisting students in developing aural skills through an in-depth analysis of the concepts of music, as well as breaking down questions and excerpts. I will also guide students with Music 1 assignments for musicology, performance (in piano) and composition.

With written theory we'll talk with each other about what you wish to improve, and then I shall explain a concept to you - followed by some exercises for the class and to take home, to make sure the concept really sinks in.

Music Theory Lessons For theory lessons, I always start with a warm up excerise where my student is set to work on a fun exercise that recaps what we touched on the week before to keep their brains refreshed. I then go into anything the student needs to work on or I provide worksheets and examples they can work on and planned lessons if they need specified help. At the end of the lesson I will work through a few harder questions with them to expand their knowledge and will give them some worksheets they can work on throughout the week if needed. During the holidays I will create a work booklet that they can work on that recaps everything we have touched on through the term/semester.
