Bass is really a band instrument and needs to be taught as such. No one takes up bass to sit around a camp fire and sing Kum-by-Yah.

Good bass players are hard to find and can always get a paying gig.

For that reason I generally teach Bass players to read music right from the 1st lesson. This makes it’s easier to teach CORRECT bass fingering as opposed to guitar fingering. Learning to read also aids a player to learn the names of the notes on their instrument; something guitarists often don’t do very well.

A good bass player needs a higher level of theory than a guitarist playing the same material, especially if the bassist has to make up their own parts. For this reason I generally start practical music theory at a much earlier stage of the learning process.

I teach pick, finger style, and slap and pop. A career minded bass player in this day and age should be able to use all of these picking styles.

** ADULT SOCIAL PLAYERS
I tend to specialise in mature age adults.

NEVER TOO OLD
I teach a lot of adults who have found it’s far easier than they thought using my methods.

But lot of adults suffer from the “I’m too old” syndrome….I’m here to tell you that adults make the great students. They’re more focused than kids, and understand that if you put in a bit of work you will be rewarded.

They do have a few slight physical problems because of years of work injuries, RSIs, and old sporting injuries.

I take it slowly, and at a pace your hand feels comfortable with. 


** STUDENTS 12 AND UP WHOSE PARENTS WANT THEIR KIDS TO LEARN SKILLS.....NOT PARTY PIECES AND BITS OF TUNES..

Sorry...I'm not going to teach you 7 Nation Army, Smoke on the Water, or Teen Spirit with 1 finger played out of time...this is entertainment....not tuition.

In the last 12 months I have taken on 4 students (from a different well known music school, who promises the earth) who had been learning at this establishment for a least 6 months, and could not play a single thing for me on their 1st lesson.

NOT A SINGLE THING, NOT A CHORD, SONG, RIFF, OR INTRO.
