Electric Guitar Lessons Hello I’m Matt, a patient, relaxed and friendly Online Guitar Tutor.

I’ve been playing guitar for 22 years and I’ve been teaching for over 5 years. I teach all ages and levels from complete beginner to advanced. I play a broad range of styles from classical, to acoustic finger style, to electric guitar. I recently moved from London to Australia. In the UK I taught over 1300 lessons, with a 5 star rating.

I like to start by getting an idea of what type of style/bands/artists you like so I can tailor the lessons to suit you.

For beginners I like to cover reading guitar tab, learning chords, scales, note length and values, practising rhythm and playing with a metronome, slides, bends, hammer ons and pull offs.

I provide notated guitar tab/sheet music for us to learn from and I email that after the lesson so you can go over and practise what we covered during the lesson.

Once we have covered the basics I always ask you to recommend a song that you would love to play! I’ve found you're more likely to practise and have fun if you learn a song you love. If the song is a bit too tricky I can create a slightly easier version of it for you.

For Intermediate Players we will cover:

Barre Chords
Modes
Chord Progression Theory
Composing Songs
Finger Picking/fingerstyle
Music Theory

I have excellent attention to detail, but I am very patient with a laid back personality. My lessons are fun and friendly, in a productive but no-pressure environment.

Electric Guitar Lessons Whether you’re a complete beginner, an intermediate player looking to break through a plateau, or an advanced guitarist aiming to refine your skills, lessons are tailored entirely to your goals. Together we’ll build a clear roadmap based on what you want to achieve, whether that’s learning your favourite songs, improving technique, developing improvisation skills, understanding music theory, songwriting, performance preparation, or working towards a professional music career.

Lessons are delivered online via Zoom using a professional high-quality setup, including a direct guitar audio feed, studio-quality microphone, high-speed internet connection, and multiple camera angles when needed. This provides clear audio and video, allowing you to see and hear every detail as if we were in the same room. Lessons can also be recorded, giving you the opportunity to revisit key concepts and practice effectively between sessions.

Students receive access to professionally prepared learning materials, including sheet music, tablature, backing tracks, exercises, practice plans, and personalised lesson notes. Every lesson is structured to provide a balance of progress, challenge, and enjoyment, ensuring you always know what to work on and why.

Drawing from years of experience performing across the UK and Europe, appearing on television, recording in professional studios, teaching hundreds of students, and working as a full-time musician, I provide practical, real-world guidance that goes beyond simply learning songs. My goal is to help you become a confident, capable musician while keeping lessons engaging, motivating, and relevant to your personal musical ambitions.

Styles taught include rock, pop, blues, indie, acoustic, fingerstyle, funk, alternative, singer-songwriter, and contemporary commercial music, with lessons adapted to suit your musical tastes and aspirations.

Electric Guitar Lessons Lessons are catered to each student individually, particularly for those who have already begun their guitar journey. I work with students to establish their goals and interests in guitar playing, and then teach them the skills they need to achieve those goals.

For beginners, you will learn the fundamentals of electric guitar playing, including:
Learning how to navigate the fretboard
Basic chord shapes
Basic scale patterns
How to achieve good tone
Simple theory concepts that are most relevant to guitar playing, such as intervals and how chords are constructed
How to practice efficiently
How to develop a good sense of timing and rhythm
Proper technique to assist in speed, accuracy, and avoiding injury
How to play your favourite songs
How to write a good riff
A wide array of techniques that every guitarist should have in their toolkit

I encourage more experienced students to determine for themselves which areas of their playing they would like to develop. That said, I'm happy to offer my advice in that area. Some examples of how I have assisted more advanced players include:
Recommending and demonstrating technique-developing exercises to help overcome particular technical problems
Assisting in the learning of difficult songs or solos
Transcribing songs or passages by ear so that students may learn them, and teaching students how to do the same
Advanced techniques, such as "Travis" picking, artificial harmonics, tapping, left and right-hand trills, voice-leading and complex chord voicings, and much more
Advanced music theory concepts such as counterpoint and functional harmony, and how they can be applied to guitar playing
Developing audiation skills
Constructing effective practice routines
And much more.

I am experienced in a wide variety of genres, and I'm confident that, regardless of one's preferred genre of music is, students will find a wealth of useful knowledge to take away from our lessons together. That said, my current area of interest on the guitar is in fingerstyle, acoustic playing-- including classical and jazz or jazz-like chord/melody arrangements of popular tunes. However, I played guitar in a metal band for almost 10 years. During that time, I performed countless live gigs, wrote music and recorded guitar tracks in a professional setting, and had some of my own compositions played on the radio as well as on YouTube and Spotify.

Electric Guitar Lessons * 45+ YEARS EXPERIENCE. OVER 80K LESSONS AND 1000s OF STUDENTS.

BAND LEVEL

If you’ve already mastered the basics of social playing you are now ready for the next step. More advanced skills are needed to handle the demands of band playing, particularly if you are looking to audition for bands, rather than just casually play with friends.
At this level I generally teach more advanced chords and techniques on a style by style basis; and begin working on lead guitar skills, practical theory, technique, ear training, and listening skills.

At this level I concentrate on exposing the student to the unique rhythm styles involved in a wide variety of commercial styles i.e. Blues, Funk, Soul, Hard rock/Metal, Reggae, Pop/Top 40 etc. Once a student develops an interest in a certain genre I tend to explore their interest in more depth.

LEAD GUITAR

I help you learn all of the scales licks and tricks that will allow you to play a wide variety of styles i.e. Blues, Classic Rock, Metal/Hard Rock, Southern Rock, Latin Rock, Jazz Fusion, and a wide variety of other styles. The emphasis for players at this level will be learning the correct techniques and skills needed to achieve virtuoso level playing; High level Theory, Pentatonic and Modal scales, and Ear training.

Some of the guitarists/styles I'm familiar with include:

SRV, JOE BONAMASSA, GARRY MORE, SANTANA, DAVID GILMORE, YNGIE MALMSTEEN, JOE SATRIANI, ROBBEN FORD, LARRY CARLTON, DUKE ROBILLIARD, AL DIMEOLA, JOHN McLAUGHLIN, FRANK GAMBALE, ALVIN LEE, ERIC CLAPTON, JOHNNY WINTER, BB KING, SCOTT HENDERSON, DICKIE BETTS, RORY GALLAGER, BUDDY GUY, DUANE ALLMAN , RITCHIE BLACKMORE, MICHAEL SCHENKER, PAUL GILBERT, ANGUS YOUNG, JIMMY PAGE, STEVE VAI, ANDY TIMMONS, ERIC JOHNSON and many more.

CAREER ORIENTATED

Generally people who are thinking about being involved in the music industry in a serious way have already been playing for a while.

When you come to me for this kind of advice I do a number of things for you.

I assess and critique your playing, and talk to you about what you hope to achieve; and what interests you. I also give you an idea as to what the professional industry requires, and where you stand in relation to that standard. We then work out a study plan together to help you achieve this goa
