Guitar Lessons
Lessons are catered to each student individually, particularly for those who have already begun their guitar journey. I work with students to establish their goals and interests in guitar playing, and then teach them the skills they need to achieve those goals.
For beginners, you will learn the fundamentals of guitar playing, including:
Learning how to navigate the fretboard
Basic chord shapes
Basic scale patterns
How to achieve good tone
Simple theory concepts that are most relevant to guitar playing, such as intervals and how chords are constructed
How to practice efficiently
How to develop a good sense of timing and rhythm
Proper technique to assist in speed, accuracy, and avoiding injury
How to play your favourite songs
How to write a good riff
A wide array of techniques that every guitarist should have in their toolkit
I encourage more experienced students to determine for themselves which areas of their playing they would like to develop. That said, I'm happy to offer my advice in that area. Some examples of how I have assisted more advanced players include:
Recommending and demonstrating technique-developing exercises to help overcome particular technical problems
Assisting in the learning of difficult songs or solos
Transcribing songs or passages by ear so that students may learn them, and teaching students how to do the same
Advanced techniques, such as "Travis" picking, artificial harmonics, tapping, left and right-hand trills, voice-leading and complex chord voicings, and much more
Advanced music theory concepts such as counterpoint and functional harmony, and how they can be applied to guitar playing
Developing audiation skills
Constructing effective practice routines
I am experienced in a wide variety of genres, and I'm confident that, regardless of one's preferred genre of music is, students will find a wealth of useful knowledge to take away from our lessons together. That said, my current area of interest on the guitar is in fingerstyle, acoustic playing-- including classical and jazz or jazz-like chord/melody arrangements of popular tunes. However, I played guitar in a metal band for almost 10 years. During that time, I performed countless live gigs, wrote music and recorded guitar tracks in a professional setting, and had some of my work played on the radio as well as on YouTube and Spotify.

Hey there!
My name is Jaxon and I'm a guitarist from Perth, Western Australia. I first started playing when I was 11 years old (I'm now 31) and began playing in bands as early as 14 years old. I have since given live performances in a variety of different styles, including rock/pop cover bands, death metal bands, and as a solo classical/jazz fingerstyle guitarist. I have also recorded guitar in a professional recording studio environment and have had had some of my own music played on the radio and on Spotify. Shortly after receiving my certificate in Music Performance from the Central Institute of Technology, I began teaching guitar to others, both in person and online. I've been teaching guitar for roughly 10 years now and during that time I've found it to be both incredibly fun and rewarding.
While continuing to both study and teach guitar, I pursued education in other fields to broaden my horizons. I received a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours from the University of Western Australia in 2020. During my time studying psychology and philosophy there, the most valuable things I learned were the processes by which people acquire and master new skills, including playing an instrument, as well as critical thinking skills. Learning to play an instrument is largely an exercise in problem solving, which requires solid critical thinking. My hope is to impart some of these skill to my students, in addition to teaching them how to play the guitar.
Ultimately, I feel that there is no greater joy in life than playing music. Learning to play the guitar does not need to feel like a daunting task. It is an awesome journey and can be incredibly addictive once the bug bites you. I work with my students to identify achievable goals to work towards in whatever specific area of guitar playing most interests them, as well as teaching them the fundamental techniques and concepts needed so that they can branch off into any area they prefer. I am also passionate about music theory and will gladly teach music theory basics to any interested student.
