Drums Lessons
I will help students learn the role of a drummer, and all tools necessary to help them achieve this.
Lessons will most often begin with foundational studies - Rudiments, counting, reading, groove playing and rhythm recognition. Application of these ideas will follow, using specific music of each examples, or playing with music, and learning to use what is musically appropriate.
I teach form a number of books, and I highly recommend that students purchase these whenever possible, in their PHYSICAL formats, for ease of access, and continued practice outside of the lessons.
I believe students will learn something unique from me due to the mentors that I have had, that still coach me on a regular basis in their approach. I believe there aren't as many drummers out there like them that there could be, so a fresh, unique perspective to the instrument is what I like to offer.

I have been playing percussion since 1996, beginning at 10 years old in my primary school concert band.
I continued on through high school, playing drumset for 5 years in the school stage band as well as percussion in the senior concert band.
During high school, I encountered one of my current mentors, Dr Grant Collins, who introduced me to a whole new world of what is possible on the drumset. During my brief studies at Southern Cross University, I also met David Jones, another well-rounded and respected Australian drummer, a master of story-telling on the drumset.
I have completed a Bachelor of Music from University of New England, and I began teaching at private studios in Brisbane before moving out to the Scenic Rim in 2023 to broaden my online teaching.
Since the early 2000's, I have been working on an applying Dr Collins' and David Jones' unique styles to my own playing, incorporating multi-timbral sounds and multi-instrument motion, including the feet!! I believe in the power of the drumset as a story-telling device, capable of delivering works as significant as any piano concerto out there. This type of playing requires a disciplined approach, but one I believe will help any student or musician think beyond simply playing the drums in a supporting role, and to what is possible in creating music utilizing the timbres of the drumset.
Throughout the years of playing, I have worked with community and professional orchestras, both as drumset player and percussionist, performing classical works, and shows such as Synthony, a blend of dance music with live orchestra and vocalists. I have also been a part of a number of punk, rock, metal, indie, jazz, funk, blues and covers bands over this time, as a permanent or session musician.
I try very much to make my students feel comfortable and relaxed during lessons, and I also believe in a disciplined approach to playing. Our job as drummers is to provide a solid foundation for other musicians as a leader, so I believe in teaching that responsibility from the beginning. Music is fun however, and one of the most amazing and FREE forms of expression, so we can be serious while also having the time of our lives!!
