Piano Lessons
Depending on whether you are an absolute beginner, self-taught as a beginner, transitioning from another teacher or returning to lessons as an adult, I base my instruction on your musical goals and your music experiences. While your goals will inform what I teach you and how, your goal will also motivate you to engage during lessons and inspire you to practice new skills between lessons.
I use a mixed method approach to teach you how to accommodate your hand-eye-ear coordination to achieve making music you enjoy. However, my own goal is to further extend your learning to embrace the full spectrum of music genres and music literacy, challenging your own preconceptions or limitations you think you may have.
My enrolment process, or pre-teaching assessment which includes a brief questionnaire before you sign up, and a complimentary virtual ‘meet & greet’ once you've signed up but before your first lesson, seeks to know and understand you and your music interests, experiences and goals, so that I can begin creating a learning programme catered specifically for you, right from the first lesson.
For all students, I recommend an initial commitment of 5 weekly, 30-minute lessons, so that I can implement and adjust your individually-catered learning programme to suit your needs.
If you already have some piano experience OR your are a later elementary / intermediate student OR you would like to progress more rapidly, I recommend extending to weekly, 45-minute lessons. If your schedule is tight OR you are in the later / intermediate levels, fortnightly 1-hour lessons can replace weekly lessons. Lessons are available during school holidays.
My goal is to support you to achieve your music aspirations, and to help you find effective ways to explore and rehearse new skills at home, even on a tight schedule. Ultimately you determine your own progress, achievements and learning goals while I customise and adapt music teaching resources and pedagogies to suit your unique musical personality.
‘Keyboard for singing’ skills, can be incorporated into your lessons, once you have a grasp of beginner piano and the fundamentals of music literacy.
Please be aware that while I provide your initial sheet music and digital learning materials, you will need to purchase your own printed and/or digital method books down the track.
You will need an acoustic piano or full-length, weighted keyboard with sustain pedal for these lessons.

Hello and welcome to my piano studio, Dr Grace Q., where I integrate my professional, vocational and personal experiences to inform and inspire your learning capacity, all through piano and music education.
Whether you are curious about your musical potential, music making techniques, reading music notation, expressing your emotions, heightening your neural-muscular memory skills or just keeping your fingers agile, my goal is to engage your fine motor capabilities, enhance your sensory integration and extend your cognitive processes, ALL while you discover the satisfaction and accomplishment of making music for your own enjoyment, sharing with family and friends or stepping into performing as a soloist or with other like-minded musicians.
I believe that everyone has the potential to learn music, and that music is the basis of all other learning, since 'sound' was our first gateway to survival and brain growth through the ability to 'aurally process' information. It is one of the few whole brain activities that positively impacts brain development and enhances brain plasticity as we continue to mature.
For these reasons and more, I enjoy witnessing the beginner's journey, but I'm also happy to consider transitioning students at any level. Theory, history and musicianship lessons are also available, as are lessons for those wanting to accompany themselves on keyboard as vocalists.
As I’ve progressed through my teaching career, I’ve noticed that later adolescent and adult students of all ages are most at risk of ‘giving up’ lessons for a variety of reasons. I therefore now dedicate my piano-teaching practice to support these age groups.
Whatever your music goals, I will adjust my educational framework to suit your unique learning style, and work alongside you to progress at your own unique pace. I also accommodate my pedagogy for those living with learning differences.
