In the Piano lessons I follow the structure of the John Thompson piano books for beginners, following on to the AMEB Piano for Leisure series.
While working through the John Thompson piano series, students learn the foundations of piano playing such as reading notes on the staff, timing and rhythm, keys and key signatures, scales, dynamics and style, finger technique, sight-reading and much more.
With the AMEB Piano for Leisure books, students continue to develop their musicianship and piano skills to a more advanced level. In the Piano for Leisure series, exams are an option which involve earning a certificate to say that you have completed a particular grade of piano in the book series. These exams involve theory components which I would also teach during the lesson. However, if a student does not wish to sit the exam they do not have to, and are able to learn the songs from the books as they please. I also allow students to suggest songs they wish to learn and am able to teach them a version of the song that is suitable for their ability.
If the student wants to, I also integrate other aspects of piano playing and applicable music theory into the lessons such as playing chords and how to read chord charts, transposition, accompaniment, etc.
Currently I teach up to Grade 3 in piano, however I am constantly working on my own abilities in piano to further my skills and ability to teach higher grades.
