Bart is an experienced and patient teacher of harp, having received the highest grading in harp pedagogy from the Queensland Conservatorium. He delights in assisting students reach their artistic goals which are reviewed regularly. He can teach harp in all major styles, whether classical, celtic, jazz or popular.
Those without their own instrument may rent a 36 string harp to help inform their decision-making. Harp rental is free for the first month, after which $20 per week is required to rent for longer periods.
Students can take their lesson on either the Salvi Iris concert grand studio harp or the Welham Celtic 'lever' harp.
Students have excelled in their AMEB harp exams receiving, on average, the Grade Award of A (Honours): "The candidate demonstrates an overall superior level of achievement in meeting the syllabus objectives in all Sections, in terms of musicianship, security of technique (including intonation, tone, phrasing, articulation, rhythm), and stylistic awareness" (from AMEB guidelines for exam criteria marking).
Some students wish to learn within a less structured, exam-free environment, but receive equal attention given to building a solid technical foundation, for we are only ever as musical as our technique allows us to be.
All students, when ready, receive opportunities to participate in Masterclasses with eminent visiting harpists such as Melanie Genin. They often benefit from further service learning opportunities, playing at weddings, private and corporate occasions and often developing their own gig schedules.
All are welcome to see if this beautiful and ancient instrument suits them, particularly those who have had a prior piano background. Those without this background are often recommended to take piano lessons with Bart first, as a year at the piano greatly accelerates the study of harp.
