Trombone Lessons

Levels Taught: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

We will discuss goals and I can help with anything from school band music preparation to audition preparation. You can expect a very involved teaching method from me; I will do my best to lead by example and personally demonstrate proper technique/tone/approach to the trombone, but will structure my teaching and our lessons depending on your preferences and goals.

I am practiced in both classical and jazz, ensemble and solo playing, and you can expect to be learning how to develop into an all-round trombonist.

Looking to seriously focus on building a reliable teaching studio and gathering serious students.

I’ve had 3 years’ experience teaching privately from primary to tertiary level, and have had overwhelmingly positive feedback from students and their parents. This includes, but is not limited to, AMEB exams and audition preparation at a community to undergraduate level.

My teaching philosophy is fairly simple: Students come first, I come second. I always aim to do my best and be the appropriate role model for my students, and I understand that it requires a lot of patience and sometimes sacrifice. I’m always willing to commute, and organize make up lessons for when lessons are cancelled, and above all I seek to adapt to my students’ needs, especially in the presence of learning disabilities.

I understand also that a teacher does not stop learning, and am always seeking to improve in my own playing and musicianship, and that as a teacher, the most important service I can provide a student is to bring them to a point at which they are both interested in and capable of pursuing unguided self-improvement.

An all-rounder trombonist, I am a Bachelor of Music (Honors) student at the University of Queensland and has held principle, second, and bass trombone positions in the UQ Symphony Orchestra and Big Band. I’ve toured both nationally and internationally with various ensembles, and am a three-time title holder of the Queensland Solo and Ensemble Championships' Junior champion of champions.

I currently study trombone under Jason Redman, who also mentored me in completing a Queensland Symphony Orchestra Internship in 2017. As such, my professional engagements include performing operas and standard orchestral repertoire with the QSO on both tenor and bass trombone, which I am a casual in. Previous teachers also include Jessica Buzbee (ANAM) Benjamin Marks (Elision) and Bill Barker (BSHS), so I have a wide range of experience to draw from when it comes to teaching methods.

In 2016, I represented Australia with the UQ Big Band as part of the 10th New York International Music Festival, where I worked with multi Grammy and Emmy award winners Randy Brecker and Gordon Goodwin, performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall and Disneyland, and received tuition from the Principle Trombone of the New York Philharmonic, Joseph Alessi, as well as Principal Trombone of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Jorgen Van Rijen.

In 2017, I made it to the final round audition for the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra associate principal trombone position, participated in the 2017 Seoul International Community Orchestra Festival as associate principal trombone, and toured Germany and China with the Queensland Youth Symphony as Principal Trombone during the Christmas school holiday season.

Although trombone is my major, I have also performed in orchestras on the trumpet, and in concert bands on the tuba. Therefore, I have firsthand experience on how to work those instruments as well as the similarities as well as nuanced differences between members of the brass family. Additionally, though it is not my specialty, I play in chamber music quite often and have played all the brass instruments in a chamber music context.

I am confident in my ability to find an engaging and fruitful method for your child to learn trombone or related brass instruments!
