I have been playing the drums since I was 4 years old, and have been in love with them for about 18 years now. Musically, I was raised on a plethora of styles and artists; with mentionable ones being the likes of Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Miles Davis, Roy Ayers, A Tribe Called Quest, and so on. Striving to learn more about music after I graduated high school, I went straight into the Bachelor Of Music program at JMI (Jazz Music Institute) at Bowen Hills. It was here where my passion for the instrument and teaching sprouted. This was mainly due to being educated by some of the country's (and the world's) finest teachers.
Being surrounded by music every day made my passion grow, and allowed me to be able to share it and educate musicians for the past 4 years. I owe most of my teaching style to my drum instructor at JMI, Dave Sanders. His method was catered extremely to the individual, with a focus on technique, fundamentals of all musical styles, and personal development. I implement all of these into my lessons, as well as believing the drums are considered a 'fun' instrument, and should be treated accordingly.
I believe encouragement especially at a younger age, is detrimental to progression. I have structured my lessons with the idea of reaching minor goals within a week or two, and have found students are more likely to want to practice, to achieve them. This paired with my focus on technique, sight reading, rudiments, and being sound in all musical genres, tends to create all-round drummers; who are capable of performing most gigs from pit-band orchestral drumming, to intricately-charted jazz gigs, to standard rock covers gigs.
