Double Bass Lessons

Levels Taught: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

As a former fulltime professional orchestra player I teach at all levels. I've played a bit of jazz and have an understanding of it, but I'm mainly a classical player. At each lesson I leave you with clear mutually agreed instructions on what's expected at the next lesson - but we all have a bad week sometimes!

I studied cello first with Cordula Distler, then at Sydney Conservatorium with Osric Fyfe and Cedric Ashton. Later transferring to double bass, I studied in Vienna with Prof Hannes Auersperg, also attending lessons as an enrolled guest with Prof Ludwig Streicher. During this time I commenced lessons on the viola da gamba with Prof José Vazquez and played in masterclasses with Wieland Kuijken. As an early music specialist I performed throughout Europe. I returned to continue a 30-year career with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, which I left in 2012 to pursue my teaching and academic work. Although I'm first and foremost a practising musician, I have a PhD in musicology from the University of Queensland.

I've been teaching alongside my career as a professional musician: at first mainly in the tertiary sector, but since 2012 also privately and in schools. My former students are now playing in at least three Australian Symphony Orchestras, as well as overseas and in teaching positions. I'm also an AMEB examiner for all strings.

The basis of good musicianship is solid technique, you really need that, and I do focus on it. As technique progresses, I feel many students don't quite understand what they are playing. What's the underlying harmony? What's the style and how should we interpret this? What's the piece saying to us, and the audience?

I always try to create a positive, welcoming environment, and yes I do have a Blue Card of course.
