Double Bass Lessons

Levels Taught: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

As a former fulltime professional orchestra player I teach at all levels. I've played a bit of jazz and have an understanding of it, but I'm mainly a classical player. At each lesson I leave you with clear mutually agreed instructions on what's expected at the next lesson - but we all have a bad week sometimes!

I studied cello first with Cordula Distler, then at Sydney Conservatorium with Osric Fyfe and Cedric Ashton. Later transferring to double bass, I studied in Vienna with Prof Hannes Auersperg, also attending lessons as an enrolled guest with Prof Ludwig Streicher. During this time I commenced lessons on the viola da gamba with Prof José Vazquez and played in masterclasses with Wieland Kuijken. As an early music specialist I performed throughout Europe. I returned to continue a 30-year career with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, which I left in 2012 to pursue my teaching and academic work. Although I'm first and foremost a practising musician, I have a PhD in musicology from the University of Queensland.

I've been teaching alongside my career as a professional musician: at first mainly in the tertiary sector, but since 2012 also privately and in schools. My former students are now playing in at least three Australian Symphony Orchestras, as well as overseas and in teaching positions. I'm also an AMEB examiner for all strings.

The basis of good musicianship is solid technique, you really need that, and I do focus on it. As technique progresses, I feel many students don't quite understand what they are playing. What's the underlying harmony? What's the style and how should we interpret this? What's the piece saying to us, and the audience?

I always try to create a positive, welcoming environment, and yes I do have a Blue Card of course.

Michael is not only a fabulous performer but is an excellent teacher for my 8 year old daughter. He also taught me years ago when I was going through the Conservatorium and is such a versatile and patient teacher.

Michael is a wonderful teacher who has taught my daughter for the past 4 years. Michael has always shown a high level of professionalism yet he also has the ability to adapt his teaching to suit the young beginner student through to the high achieving student. Michael’s teaching has encouraged my daughter to achieve her musical goals and we are very grateful for his high level of expertise. I would recommend Michael for all age students at any level of musical ability.

Dr Michael O’Loghlin has been my daughter’s double bass teacher for over 4 years. Under Michael’s tuition she has progressed from a beginner player level, to playing in QYS and contemplating pursuing music at University.

Michael’s musical proficiency is renowned. I am not a musician, but it is a measure of Michael’s standing that I knew of him as a strings expert in Brisbane before my daughter became his student. His students are fortunate to benefit from his deep knowledge of music – practical, theoretical and historical. Michael’s personal experience as a performer and an examiner contributes greatly to his strength as a teacher. This breadth of knowledge and experience adds colour and perspective to his teaching.

Michael is a thorough and generous teacher. His attention to technical proficiency is always foremost. He is particularly good at tailoring his teaching to suit the interest and capability of his students. He clearly aims to teach by an “instruct, instill and inspire” regime, rather than by driving students. I believe that this is particularly important for the teaching of creative subjects such as music. Michael is also very understanding and accommodating with respect to other academic demands. He adapts his teaching program to accommodate periods where the school workload is heavy. Equally, he encourages progressive improvement, musical awareness and an enjoyment of the journey towards musical proficiency.

I am very happy to give the highest recommendation of Michael as a teacher not only for his expertise and skill, but also his kindness, sense of humour and genuine love and knowledge of music.
