Kate holds a Bachelor degree from the Sydney Conservatorium and a Masters degree from the Royal Conservatorium of The Hague. She previously served as Principal Flute of the Hong Kong Sinfonetta and has worked with many of Australia’s leading orchestras including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, Australian Opera and Ballet, West Australian Symphony and Queensland Symphony. Internationally she has been engaged by the Residentie Orkest (The Hague Philharmonic), Limburgs Symphony, New Zealand Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic and The Macau Orchestra.

In 2009 she was invited by Vienna Philharmonic principal flute, Walter Auer to participate in the orchestra’s prestigious Summer Academy and has also attended courses and masterclasses with many renowned teachers, notably Rien de Reede (NL), Maxence Larrieu (FR), Michael Cox, William Bennett and Paul Edmund-Davies (UK).

Kate’s pedagogical approach is heavily influenced by her own experience with many excellent teachers, notably Rosamund Plummer (AUS), Thies Roorda (NLD), Rien de Reede (NLD), Michael Cox (UK), Walter Auer (AU). Her performing career also strongly inspires her teaching by bringing her into contact with many outstanding musicians from all over the world. It is Kate's belief that mastery of basic technique provides the foundation for personal musical expression, with sound production and physical awareness being the pre-eminent factors for flautists. Development of posture and sound production are integral to her teaching.

She believes that every child has the ability to play music and hopes that a positive beginning with music may encourage children towards a lifelong engagement with the arts. Kate has a wide range of teaching experience with students of all ages and levels. Several former younger students have gone on to study music at a tertiary level and Kate is also experienced at teaching conservatorium level students.

Student Feedback

Jeanette S.

After having the two introductory lessons, my daughter is continuing to learn the flute with Kate. I have found Kate to be patient, professional and flexible to my daughters needs. Kate is full of knowledge and has the ability to convey information in a manner that is detailed and yet still easy to understand. My daughter is benefiting tremendously from Kate's guidance. I can highly recommend flute lessons with Kate.
